IAPEX-2105

More From Mr. Shahbaz Sharif

The current year’s subject “ArchiTourism” highlights significance of the two entities merging together. It is difficult to discuss tourism without discussing architecture. Their mutual relationship is obvious since ancient times, where the architecture as a tourist attraction had a very pivotal role to play. The significance of buildings and built environment to tourism is unquestionable, as the economic and social contributions they provide to tourism is symbolic. The iconic buildings make cities easily recognizable, historic buildings capture commemoration of famous events and people, the galleries and museums hold cultural values and serve as places of focus and inspiration that bring communities together. Lately there has been a major transforma tion. Until a few decades, historical heritage was the basis of cultural and architectural tourism, today excellent modern architecture has the same allure, strengthening the centuries old bond of Architecture and Tourism. In this whole scenario the tourism can provide jobs and improve the wealth of an area. Many developing countries are keen to develop tourism in order to become richer and improve the quality of life for their people. On this occasion, I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to IAP Lahore Chapter which throughout the years has been extremely reliable in arranging such profitable occasions which not just profit experts and students associated with the building business but also the society in general.I am certain that the experts, visitors, exhibitors and overall population who are going to this IAPEX 2018 will profit by the three day event.

It gives me immense pleasure to learn that IAPEX 2019 is going to take place in 15 - 17 February 2019. The topic chosen for the theme of this year’s event is equally exciting. The importance of the subject of rapid urbanization that is taking place specially in Lahore needs to be studied and policies formulated accordingly. People face a range of unprecedented existential challenges from the clear impacts of climate change to migration and displacement change to migration and displacement, the rapid rate of urbanization in our cities and natural resources depletion. Consequently, we are still struggling to provide safe and affordable housing to all. There is an urgent need for accelerated transformation in the energy, transport, buildings, agriculture, forestry and other land use sectors to restrict climate change impacts. The government at all levels, local authorities, corporation, professional bodies and civil society groups most align themselves with the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals that we have committed to adopt them as a common framework for action. We the Architects and Planners should be in the vanguard of these issues. “ My best of wishes for a successful IAPEX 2019 !

Conservation of heritage; exploring new contexts. “Following are the excerpts from SANDRA USKOKOVIC writings “ The heritage field of today is the theater of an unequal and dubious battle - in which the power of individuals remains great and in which the determination of a mayor, of an architect, an urbanest, or a heritage administrator can still change the fate of a monument or an ancient city. There is also a trend, which is now dominant that flies the flag of profitability; all too often with the support of governments and public collectivizes that devises new forms of valorization. Unfortunately, it is because of the people’s unconsciousness that the identity of peripheral culture is being destroyed, the elements of peripheral culture are being absorbed by the so-called "global culture“, and the intangible setting of peripheral cultures is gradually on the way of being forgotten. Architecture and the built environment are by-products of civilization, ideology and cultural processes, which therefore cannot be separated from each other. In other words, a focus on the cultures themselves is needed. Significance may lie in the intangible or symbolic, and in preservation of the craftsman’s skills rather than of the fabric itself. The concept of Modern heritage has recently emerged which goes beyond the focus on individual monuments. Such concept implies that consideration should be given to a broader range of sites, including those with associative and context value, that form the systems and networks that are traces and experiences of the processes of modernization, modernity and modernism. Thanks to the globalization that we have been able to think about and discuss heritage and conservation issues in a much broader context, connecting them horizontally beyond geographic areas. It is heartening to know that our younger professionals are conscious of the fact that our Heritage to be preserved in the modern context with the perfect urbanism setting. On behalf of the Executive Committee of PCATP (2015-2017), I congratulate the team of IAP-LC for organizing IAPEX -2017 and wish them all the success for ever in their efforts. .

It is a matter of great pleasure for me to welcome you to the annual IAPEX 2017 Lahore on behalf of the Executive Committee of the Lahore Chapter Institute of Architects Pakistan. The theme of the IAPEX this year is “Conservation of Heritage: Exploring New Contexts.” which is of great importance in the present scenario of Pakistan. In the last quarter of the 20th century, a new trend has emerged in re-using historical buildings; there have been attempts to create new experiences along with old ones. This has generated a new debate and requires a very sensitive approach as it is critical to strike a delicate balance .In this conference scholars are going to explore how experience of Heritage property changes, when changes are made inside or outside Heritage property. Students Jamboree which is now an integral part of the IAPEX will be attended by students of accredited schools of Architecture. This is a unique opportunity for students of Architecture from all over Pakistan to interact, exchange ideas and benefit from each other’s experience This is a very special IAPEX since renowned international architect conservator’s are also participating in this important event. This year we are expecting a very special Building Material Exhibition. The response from the leading building material producers is simply outstanding.Iam grateful for their confidence and trust. All the stalls were booked in advance. This is due to excellent team work of my Executive Committee members under the guidance of Faizullah Qureshi , the Convener of IAPEX. I am looking forward to meet President IAP Ar. Ali Zafar Qazi, members of IAP National Council, and IAP chapter representatives. I once again would like to thank LC-IAP organizing committee members and student volunteers. Without their help it would not have been possible to organize this event. Looking forward to meeting you at this event

Architects Regional Council Asia It is a delight to hear that IAP Lahore Chapter has chosen to select "ArchiTourism" as their subject for its IAPEX-2018. As i start my second year in service as President ARCASIA this is specially of interest for me. In my travels attached with leading the 21 Asian Institutes of Architecture from Pakistan to Japan west to East, China to Indonesia North to South I have learned the amazing beauty of the People and Architecture and destinations of these nations and region. In my presidential term i am leading my ARCASIA OB team to interact with Regions other than Asia and within Asia to share the 5 Areas that we look at in particular Green and Sustainability, Architectural Education, Architectural Practice, Social Responsibility and of course the all important Young Architect. We have further taken it upon us to look specifically at Heritage and Urbanism as two foci that are very relevant to our Past and Present. Our travels in this very specific " ARCASIA Archi Tourism" have taken me and my team to Shanghai, Changmai, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Yogyakarta, Budapest, London, Rome in the last few months and look forward to Colombo, Tokyo and Prague and so many diverse places around these destinations as well. It is not only the Architecture but the People in these places that help us evolve into this "ArchiTourism" complete experience. The Languages and Cultures provide the colourful canvas that act as a backdrop to the Architecture that we visit and enjoy making friends and creating memories as we experience it, in a pallate of Time, Place, Color and Experience that forms the essence of "ArchiTourism". I hope that the Three days IAPEX-2018 in Lahore will be exploratory in its quest to discuss and engage on the wonderful concepts of "ArchiTourism". I wish you all the best in this wonderful planned event in Lahore, which for these three days will become the "ArchiTourism" capital of the country. Convener IAPEX 2017-Lahore

“Growing up from crayons to drafting sets to AutoCAD amidst architectural drawings and magazines, as an Architect’s daughter, both weekend site visits with my father & the Annual IAPEX event glorified my childhood. Hence, I hold this particularly close to my heart and take extreme honor to be invited to convene this prestigious event. On behalf of Institute of Architects Pakistan(IAP), I am extremely delighted to welcome you to IAPEX 2019-Lahore Chapter. This years’ theme “Lahore Urbanised” will bring together architects, designers, planners, academics, social and environmental scientists and experts from related disciplines to discuss issues of Urbanization in the rich cultural, historical and architectural landscape of Lahore. Following our legacy, we at IAPEX provide a platform to feature some of the Lahore’s foremost architects, planners, policymakers, builders, and thinkers and specialists to convene under one platform and engage in enlightening and thought provoking discussions circling around concepts of public participation, inclusivity, design strategies, human consequences, recreation and public participation in the “urbanized” Lahore. Our events which include Architects Convention, Building Materials Exhibition and Architecture Students’ Jamboree are designed to foster new knowledge production with our forum sessions deliberating upon various perspectives, covering design of cities and exploring issues and strategies behind urban design, taking Lahore as a primary case study. The theme is less focused on the history of the city than on the way it is adapting to the challenges of the present and future, notably climate change and population growth. I sincerely wish to make IAPEX 2019 an international platform where all experts can share views & create awareness about these critical issues among all and concurrently work out sustainable solutions for the coming generations

Conservation of heritage; exploring new contexts

(PENDING)
IAP-Lahore Chapter has chosen “Lahore Urbanized” as the theme for IAPex-2019 which is very timely and a pressing issue of Lahore at the moment when unplanned urban sprawl on account of rural to urban migration and population increase have created not only different social problems but have also adversely affected the overall natural environment of this beautiful historical City. Lahore known to be the city of gardens has today lesser urban green spaces/trees but more pollution and congestion than it used to have when I was studying here in early eighties as a result of these unplanned, up hazard urban growth and the resultant development works of infrastructure including roads, bridges, underpasses and other structures to connect them. The alarming part is that a low density urban growth has come up at the cost of prime agriculture land on the city outskirts, creating shortage of vegetable, fruit and water not only for the population of Lahore but also the smaller towns close to it. I am sure the learned speakers during the Int’l Conference would deliberate upon these issues in a greater detail, share their experiences and suggest ways and means to meet the present and future challenges of urbanization in Lahore and recommend to the authorities for preparing a sustainable and workable Master Plan- not detrimental to the natural environment of the city. The Conference which would be held concurrently with the exhibition at the prestigious Lahore Expo Centre augmented with notable national and international professionals as guest speakers is a great achievement of IAP-Lahore Chapter. I hope, all the participants including Architects, students of Architecture coming from all over the country will enjoy the array of events that have been planned for the 03 days of IAPex-2019. It would also give them an opportunity to reconnect with the fellow Architects across the country and abroad, gather new aspirations and ideas generated out of the Conference technical sessions and Exhibition. Finally, my best wishes to the Chairman, IAP-Lahore Chapter, the Executive Committee and the Organizing Committee for the great success of IAPeX-2019.
